Note from Alli:

Our Storyteller, Billy, started off with body dissatisfaction and body-shame, which he conquered in his unique way: he let it fuel him. As his narrative shows, Billy changed these problems into life-enhancing fitness advice.

I asked Billy to contribute this piece because he and his studio have changed my life. For me, dance meant technique and competition, and fitness meant weight loss and calorie burn. Years of both had burnt me out.

When I arrived at his studio to meet a friend outside, an open house was occurring inside. The music and my curiosity propelled me into the crowded room filled with people sweating and smiling. Two things were immediately clear: fun was happening, and any “diva” attitudes would not be tolerated. (Yessss! Cheering sounds!) For more than an hour, the love of movement I felt from the teachers and students filled me. That was the first time I’d experienced fitness or dance as safe, meaning without judgment from self or others. And years later, the studio continues to bring joy, which keeps me going back for more.

Once, a scale mysteriously appeared in the bathroom. Until then, I had found the space to be one of body acceptance messaging. I left a blunt comment card about it, and poof! The scale disappeared.

The fitness industry can be tricky to navigate since it can include covert and overt diet and weight messages. Practice using your voice; it’ll probably become a vital tool in your conquering toolbox and using it can cause positive change.

Lastly and important to your pursuit of overcoming your issues, find exercise you appreciate. These suggestions might assist with how:

Seek a form of physical activity that evokes an emotional response that’s more neutral-to-positive (e.g., “not dread”) than negative (e.g., “dread”).
